AEO for healthcare is the work of getting a practice named or cited when a patient asks an AI tool a health question. AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The answer engines are Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, and similar tools. This guide covers what each one requires and what a practice can do this month.

AEO for healthcare at a glance

  • 32% of US adults used AI tools for health information or advice in the past year (KFF poll, February to March 2026).
  • AI Overviews appeared on about 51% of 130,070 US health searches (WebFX, July 2025).
  • Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements beyond normal Search.
  • A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Brand mentions on other websites correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664. Number of site pages correlates at 0.170 (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands).

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns a ranked link on a results page. AEO earns a mention or a citation inside the answer itself. The patient may never see a list of links. Our simple guide to SEO, AEO, and GEO explains the three terms side by side.

How many patients ask AI about their health?

About one in three US adults asked AI about their health in the past year. KFF surveyed 1,343 US adults from February 24 to March 2, 2026. The margin of error is 3 percentage points for the full sample.

Adults who used AI for mental health16%

Mental health AI users who then saw a mental health professional42%

The AI answer often comes before the appointment. Among AI health users, 41% said a major reason was to look up information before deciding whether to see a provider. A practice that the answer names is in front of that patient at the moment of decision.

Which health searches trigger a Google AI Overview?

Long, informational health questions trigger AI Overviews most often. WebFX studied 130,070 US healthcare searches in July 2025.

AI Overview rate
Searches of 1 to 2 words35.8%
Searches of 3 to 4 words50.5%
Searches of 5 to 6 words63.0%
Searches of 7 or more words73.9%
Informational searches66.9%
Transactional searches35.3%
Searches with a location35.8%

This tells a practice where to aim. Question pages such as "how long does recovery take after a root canal" face an AI Overview about three times out of four. Location searches face one about one time out of three. Local SEO still handles the "near me" searches.

What does Google require to appear in AI Overviews?

Google requires nothing extra. Its documentation states: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

Google lists these practices for its AI features:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and at the CDN or host.
  • Make content easy to find through internal links.
  • Make important content available as text.
  • Make structured data match the visible text on the page.
  • Keep Business Profile information up to date.

What does ChatGPT require to show a practice?

ChatGPT search requires that its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, can reach the site. OpenAI documents three separate crawlers. Each one follows its own robots.txt rule.

What it doesIf you block it
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces websites in ChatGPT's search featuresThe site "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers"
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's modelsThe content is not used for training
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user's question calls for itOpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it

The settings are independent. A practice can block GPTBot to opt out of training and still allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in answers. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check both names today.

What makes an AI answer name one practice over another?

Mentions of the brand on other websites show the strongest link to AI Overview visibility. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and published the results in May 2025.

Correlation
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Number of backlinks0.218
Number of site pages0.170

Page content also matters. A 2023 research paper on generative engine optimization by Aggarwal and colleagues found that content changes can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

What should a practice do first?

  1. Check robots.txt

Confirm that Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot are not blocked. Ask your host whether the CDN or firewall blocks AI crawlers.

  2. Answer in the first sentence

Open each page with a direct answer to one patient question. Use the question as the heading.

  3. Put facts in text

Write hours, insurance plans, services, and provider credentials as text. Do not leave them inside images or PDFs.

  4. Match structured data to the page

Mark up only what a visitor can read on the page. Google asks that structured data match the visible text.

  5. Update the Business Profile

Correct the hours, phone, address, and services. Google names an up-to-date Business Profile as a practice for its AI features.

  6. Earn mentions on other sites

List the practice wherever it truly belongs: insurer directories, hospital affiliation pages, professional associations, and local news.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the work of getting a business named or cited inside answers from AI tools such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

Does a medical practice need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google states that there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

How does a website get into ChatGPT search answers?

The site must allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

Can a practice block AI training and still appear in ChatGPT?

Yes. GPTBot handles training and OAI-SearchBot handles search. OpenAI says the two settings are independent, so a site can block one and allow the other.

How many health searches show an AI Overview?

About 51% in a WebFX study of 130,070 US healthcare searches from July 2025. The rate was 73.9% for searches of seven or more words.
