Quick answer
To check if AI recommends your practice, ask the main AI tools the questions your patients ask and record whether your practice is named, linked, and described correctly. The Webpatch AI Visibility Check does this in five steps: write ten patient prompts, run them in four AI tools, score each answer, check that AI search crawlers can reach your site, and repeat every month.
To check if AI recommends your practice, ask the main AI tools the questions your patients ask and record whether your practice is named, linked, and described correctly. We call this process the Webpatch AI Visibility Check. It has five steps and takes about an hour. A practice manager can run it without technical help.
The Webpatch AI Visibility Check at a glance
Write ten patient prompts
Write the questions a patient in your town would ask an AI tool about your specialty.
Run them in four AI tools
Use ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude. Start a new chat for each prompt.
Score each answer
Record three things: named, linked, and accurate. Note which competitors appear.
Check crawler access
Open your robots.txt file and confirm that the AI search crawlers are not blocked.
Fix and repeat monthly
Fix the gaps the scorecard shows. Run the same ten prompts again next month.
Why should a practice check its AI visibility?
Is AI recommending you?
Webpatch can show you how your practice appears in ChatGPT, Google’s AI, and search — and what to fix first.
Check your visibility →A practice should check because patients now ask AI before they book. In a KFF poll of 1,343 US adults fielded from February 24 to March 2, 2026, 32% had used AI tools for health information or advice in the past year. Among those users, 41% said a major reason was to look up information before deciding whether to see a provider.
Search rankings do not tell you what an AI tool says. The only way to know is to ask it.
Step 1: Which prompts should you test?
Test ten prompts across four types. Replace the specialty, town, and practice name with your own.
| Example prompt | How many | |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | Who is the best pediatric dentist in Plano, Texas? | 3 |
| Condition | My child chipped a front tooth. Who should I see in Plano? | 3 |
| Comparison | Compare pediatric dentists in Plano that take Delta Dental. | 2 |
| Brand | What do you know about [practice name] in Plano? | 2 |
Write the prompts the way a patient talks. Long questions matter. In a WebFX study of 130,070 US health searches, 73.9% of searches with seven or more words showed a Google AI Overview.
Step 2: Where should you run the prompts?
Run each prompt in four tools: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude. Follow three rules so the test is fair.
- Start a new chat for every prompt. Earlier messages change later answers.
- Do not name your practice in the first three prompt types. You want to see whether the tool names you unprompted.
- Run each prompt twice. AI answers can differ from one run to the next. Record both.
Never type patient information into the test
Use invented scenarios only. A real patient's name or details must not go into a consumer AI tool.
Step 3: How do you score an answer?
Score the first run of each prompt on three yes-or-no questions. Ten prompts in four tools give 40 scored answers and a top score of 120. Use the second run to note where the answer changed.
| Question | Points | |
|---|---|---|
| Named | Does the answer name your practice? | 1 |
| Linked | Does the answer link to or cite your website? | 1 |
| Accurate | Are your address, hours, services, and insurance details correct? | 1 |
Also write down two things for each answer: which other practices the tool named, and which websites it cited. Those two lists show who the tool trusts in your town today.
Step 4: Can AI crawlers reach your website?
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for these crawler names. A "Disallow: /" line under any of them blocks that tool's search.
| Crawler name | What the company says | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OAI-SearchBot | Sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot | "Designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot | Blocking may reduce the site's visibility and accuracy in user search results |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Googlebot | A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search |
Training crawlers are separate. GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect content for model training. A practice can block those and still allow the search crawlers above. OpenAI states that its settings are independent.
Step 5: What do you fix after the check?
Match each scorecard gap to a fix.
| Likely cause | Fix | |
|---|---|---|
| Not named | Few mentions of the practice on other websites | Get listed in insurer directories, hospital affiliation pages, and professional associations |
| Named but not linked | No page answers the question directly | Write one page per question. Answer in the first sentence. |
| Wrong details | Old or conflicting information online | Correct the Google Business Profile and every directory listing |
| Missing in one tool only | That tool's crawler is blocked | Edit robots.txt and ask your host about firewall rules |
The first fix has data behind it. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in Google AI Overviews, at 0.664. Number of site pages had the weakest, at 0.170. Our guide to AEO for healthcare covers each fix in detail.
How often should you run the check?
Run it once a month with the same ten prompts. Keep each month's score in one spreadsheet. The trend matters more than any single score. A rising score means the fixes are working. A flat score after three months means the practice needs more mentions on other websites, not more pages of its own.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my practice?
Ask it. Open a new chat, type a question a local patient would ask about your specialty without naming your practice, and see whether the answer names you. Repeat with ten prompts and record the results.
What is the Webpatch AI Visibility Check?
It is a five-step test: write ten patient prompts, run them in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude, score each answer for named, linked, and accurate, check crawler access in robots.txt, then fix the gaps and repeat monthly.
Why does ChatGPT not show my website?
One cause is a blocked crawler. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check your robots.txt file for that name.
Can I block AI training and still appear in AI answers?
Yes. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot are separate from search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot. A site can block the first group and allow the second.
How often should a practice check its AI visibility?
Once a month, with the same ten prompts, so the scores can be compared over time.
