Google showed an AI Overview on 36 of the 60 dental searches we checked, or 60%. The split was sharp. Is AI recommending you?
Webpatch can show you how your practice appears in ChatGPT, Google’s AI, and search — and what to fix first.
Check your visibility →We used Ahrefs Keywords Explorer with the US database. We pulled keywords that contain "dentist" or "dental". We removed searches Ahrefs marks as branded or navigational, such as chain names. We kept the top 60 by monthly search volume. Together they total about 3.6 million estimated monthly searches.
For each search, we recorded the SERP features Ahrefs saw on its last check. Those checks ran between October 4 and October 12, 2026. We counted a search as having an AI Overview when Ahrefs listed the "ai_overview" feature.
Limits of this data
Ahrefs records one snapshot per search from its own crawl. Real results change by location, device and day. Treat these numbers as a pattern, not a guarantee for any one patient's screen.
How often did Google show an AI Overview on dental searches?
Ahrefs recorded an AI Overview on 36 of the 60 searches. Those 36 searches account for about 1.66 million of the 3.6 million monthly searches, or 46% of the volume. The share by volume is lower because the biggest searches, such as "dentist near me" at 759,000 a month, showed no AI Overview.
| Searches | With AI Overview | With map pack | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All searches | 60 | 36 (60%) | 37 (62%) |
| "Near me" searches | 18 | 3 (17%) | 16 (89%) |
| Other searches | 42 | 33 (79%) | 21 (50%) |
| Cost searches | 7 | 7 (100%) | 1 (14%) |
Which dental searches got an AI Overview?
Treatment and cost searches did. All 7 cost searches had one, including "dental implants cost", "how much are dental implants" and "affordable dental implants". All 4 searches that start with "what" or "how" had one too. So did procedure terms such as "dental crown", "dental bridge", "dental bonding" and "dental veneers".
Three near-me searches were exceptions. "Emergency dentist near me", "cosmetic dentist near me" and "dental fillings near me" each showed an AI Overview. The first two also showed a map pack.
Which dental searches showed a map pack instead?
Searches for a place did. "Dentist near me", "dentist", "pediatric dentist", "best dentist near me" and "dental office near me" all showed a map pack and no AI Overview. Of the 60 searches, 22 showed a map pack without an AI Overview. Only 2 showed neither: two dental assistant job searches.
Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. Its local ranking page also says: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." For near-me searches, the Google Business Profile still does most of the work.
What does this mean for a dental practice?
Near-me searches
The map pack dominates. Keep the Google Business Profile complete and collect genuine reviews.
Treatment searches
AI Overviews dominate. Publish clear treatment pages that explain what happens, who it suits and recovery.
Cost searches
Every one had an AI Overview. Publish honest price ranges, insurance notes and payment options.
What should a dental practice check first?
Start with volume. The 18 near-me searches in our sample total about 1.49 million estimated monthly searches, about 41% of the sample. The 7 cost searches total about 219,000. Both groups matter, but they need different work.
Check the map pack
Search your main services with "near me" from your area and note whether your practice appears.
Check AI Overviews
Search your top treatments and costs and note which sites the AI Overview cites.
Fix the profile
Complete categories, services, hours and photos in your Google Business Profile.
Fill page gaps
Write a clear page for each treatment and cost question you could not find yourself in.
Google's AI features page says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The work is the same SEO work. Clear, accurate pages that answer the patient's question give AI Overviews something to cite. Our AEO guide for healthcare explains how to structure those pages, and SEO for dentists covers the local side.
