Let OpenAI's search crawler read your site, state your practice facts in plain text, and keep those facts the same everywhere they appear. No one can guarantee a recommendation. OpenAI says: "Placement is not guaranteed." We read OpenAI's help and developer pages on October 10, 2026.

ChatGPT recommendations at a glance

  • Eligibility: OpenAI says "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search."
  • Crawler: OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features."
  • Ranking: OpenAI names no formula. It says ChatGPT uses "multiple factors."
  • Tracking: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends.
  • Demand: Ahrefs shows 500 US searches a month for "how to rank in chatgpt" (checked October 10, 2026).

How does ChatGPT decide which practices to name?

Is AI recommending you?

Webpatch can show you how your practice appears in ChatGPT, Google’s AI, and search — and what to fix first.

Check your visibility →

It searches the web when the question needs current facts. OpenAI says: "ChatGPT may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." A question such as "best pediatric dentist near me" is that kind of question. OpenAI adds that ChatGPT search "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries." Your practice must match those rewritten searches, not only the words the patient typed.

OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula. Its help page says: "ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information." The next line is the honest limit of any advice: "Placement is not guaranteed."

ChatGPT does not rely on its own index alone. OpenAI says "ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers." The page does not name them. It links to Microsoft's privacy statement for how providers handle queries. Ordinary search visibility still matters.

Can ChatGPT read your website?

Check this first. OpenAI runs several crawlers with different jobs. A site that blocks the wrong one drops out of ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI states: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." The table shows what OpenAI's developer page said on October 10, 2026.

OpenAI crawlers and what each one does, from OpenAI's developer documentation, checked October 10, 2026.
What OpenAI says it doesWhat to do
OAI-SearchBotIt "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"Allow it in robots.txt
GPTBotCrawls content "that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models"Your choice. It does not control search answers
ChatGPT-UserUsed "for certain user actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs"It "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search"

OpenAI's advice is plain: "we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file." Ask your web team to open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for a rule that blocks it. Check the firewall and the CDN too. A security setting that blocks unknown bots can block this one.

What should your website say so ChatGPT can recommend you?

It should state the facts a patient asks about, in text a machine can read. OpenAI says "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search." Being eligible is not being chosen. ChatGPT can only repeat what it can find and read. This list is Webpatch's working practice, not an OpenAI rule.

  • Who and where

Practice name, specialty, full address, phone number and the areas you serve. Use the same wording on every page.

  • What you treat

One page per service or condition. Open each page with a two-sentence answer.

  • Who treats

A profile page for each clinician with training and credentials.

  • How to book

Hours, insurance accepted, new-patient status and how to make an appointment.

Keep the same facts on your Google Business Profile, insurer directories and other listings. A system that finds two phone numbers has no way to know which one is right.

Does ChatGPT use the patient's location?

Yes, roughly. OpenAI says: "ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on your IP address to provide relevant local results." Precise location is a separate choice. OpenAI says: "Device location sharing is optional and off by default." With it, ChatGPT "can use more specific information to answer questions about nearby businesses, local news, and weather." On phones, OpenAI says "relevant results may also include a map." State your city and neighborhoods in text so a local question can match you.

How do you track visits from ChatGPT?

Look for one tag in your analytics. OpenAI says: "ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs." Filter your traffic report by that source. Count visits and inquiries from it each month. The number shows clicks. It does not show the answers where ChatGPT named you and nobody clicked.

How do you check whether ChatGPT recommends your practice?

Ask it the questions your patients ask, and write down the answers. Use a fresh chat each time. Note whether your practice is named, what ChatGPT says about you, and which sources it cites. OpenAI warns: "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." Expect answers to vary. Our guide to The Webpatch AI Visibility Check gives the full method.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot

Check robots.txt, the firewall and the CDN. Allow OpenAI's search crawler.

  2. Publish plain facts

Put name, specialty, address, phone, hours and insurance in text on the site.

  3. Answer real questions

Give each service a page that opens with a short, direct answer.

  4. Match your listings

Make your Business Profile and directory listings agree with the website.

  5. Measure monthly

Run the same patient questions each month. Track visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com.

How Webpatch helps

Webpatch builds and manages websites for healthcare practices, with answer engine optimization as a lead service. We check that AI search crawlers can reach your site. We rewrite service pages so each one opens with a clear answer. We bring your listings in line with the site. We run The Webpatch AI Visibility Check on a schedule and report what changed. We do not promise a recommendation, because OpenAI does not offer one. Read AEO for Healthcare for the wider method, or contact Webpatch to check how AI describes your practice today.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to read your site. State your practice facts in plain text. Keep them the same on every listing. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

How do you rank in ChatGPT search?

OpenAI publishes no formula. It says: "ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information." Make your site readable, accurate and specific.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

OpenAI describes GPTBot as the crawler for content that may be used in model training. Search uses a different crawler. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."

How long does a robots.txt change take to reach ChatGPT search?

OpenAI says: "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for our systems to adjust." That covers crawler access only. It does not mean your practice will be named.

Can I track traffic from ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI says: "ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs." Filter your analytics by that source.

Does ChatGPT show local practices near the patient?

It can. OpenAI says ChatGPT "may use an approximate location based on your IP address to provide relevant local results." Precise device location is optional and off by default.

Can anyone guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?

No. OpenAI's help page says: "Placement is not guaranteed." Be careful with any vendor that promises one.
