Google's AI Overviews cited hospitals, professional associations, YouTube and online therapy companies most often for therapy searches. Private practices made up 3 of the 34 cited links we checked. Of 20 high-volume US mental health therapy searches, 13 showed an AI Overview. The 7 without one were broad or near-me searches, and all 7 showed a local map pack. We pulled the data from Ahrefs on October 16, 2026.

We used Ahrefs Keywords Explorer with the US database. We pulled the 45 highest-volume searches containing "therapist", "therapy" or "counseling", excluding searches Ahrefs marks as branded or navigational. We kept the 20 about mental health therapy or counseling. We dropped physical, occupational, speech, red light, hormone, IV and similar therapies. The 20 searches total about 1.83 million estimated monthly searches.

For each search, we recorded the SERP features in Ahrefs' latest check. For four searches with an AI Overview, we pulled every link Ahrefs listed as cited in the AI Overview: "emdr therapy", "cognitive behavioral therapy", "online therapy" and "marriage counseling". We then sorted each cited site by type.

How often did Google show an AI Overview on therapy searches?

Ahrefs recorded an AI Overview on 13 of the 20 searches. Those 13 account for about 964,000 of the 1.83 million monthly searches, or 53% of the volume. Every search that named a type of therapy had one. None of the broad or near-me searches did.

Which sites did Google's AI Overviews cite?

Across the four AI Overviews, Ahrefs listed 34 cited links: 8 for "emdr therapy", 10 for "cognitive behavioral therapy", 13 for "online therapy" and 3 for "marriage counseling". Large health and media sites took most of them.

Other sites5openpathcollective.org, projecthealthyminds.com, policylab.us and two others

The treatment searches leaned on clinical authorities. The "cognitive behavioral therapy" AI Overview cited Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Health, Rush and the APA. The "online therapy" AI Overview leaned on companies that sell it, with 5 of 13 links going to Talkspace, BetterHelp, Headspace and Brightside.

Did any private therapy practices get cited?

Yes, three. The "emdr therapy" AI Overview cited the EMDR page of a counseling practice in Wichita, Kansas, next to Cleveland Clinic and the APA. The "marriage counseling" AI Overview cited two couples counseling practices, one in Baltimore. Those two practices filled 2 of the 3 cited links for that search.

All three cited pages were dedicated service pages. Each one covered a single type of therapy. None was a general home page.

What does this mean for a therapy practice?

  • Near-me searches

All 4 showed a map pack and no AI Overview. The Google Business Profile still decides these.

  • Therapy-type searches

All 13 showed an AI Overview. A clear page for each therapy you offer gives it something to cite.

  • Couples searches

"Marriage counseling" cited two private practices. Specific service pages can compete here.

Google's AI features page says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The cited practice pages each explained one therapy on its own page.

What should a therapy practice check first?

Start where clients look. A KFF poll fielded in early 2026 found that 16% of the public turns to AI chatbots for mental health advice. These four checks take an afternoon.

  1. Search your therapy types

Search each therapy you offer, such as EMDR or couples counseling, and note which sites the AI Overview cites.

  2. Check near-me results

Search "therapist near me" from your area and note whether your practice appears in the map pack.

  3. Give each therapy its own page

Write one page per therapy: what it is, who it helps, what a session involves, and who on your team provides it.

  4. Complete your profile

Fill in categories, services, hours and booking link in your Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

How often does Google show AI Overviews for therapy searches?

In our October 2026 check of 20 high-volume US mental health therapy searches, Ahrefs recorded an AI Overview on 13, or 65%. Every search naming a specific type of therapy had one.

Do 'therapist near me' searches show AI Overviews?

Not in our sample. None of the 4 near-me searches had an AI Overview, and all 4 showed a local map pack.

Which websites do Google's AI Overviews cite for therapy topics?

Across 34 cited links in four AI Overviews, the most common types were professional associations, YouTube videos and online therapy companies (6 each), then hospitals and health publishers (5).

Can a small therapy practice get cited in an AI Overview?

Yes. Three private practice pages were cited in our sample, each a dedicated page about one type of therapy. That is 3 of 34 links, so it happens, but large sites take most citations.
